Part of creating a film is helping the production team understand at a deep level what what are hoping to transmit. We’ve been asked a series of questions which we are working this week to get the bones of the film in place. One of the prompts is “Define family recovery in one sentence.”
I’ve been writing versions of my own answer for days changing words, shifting things around. I made a note to myself that there is some deeper truth that hasn’t been articulated. What I know is that it’s personal and cultural and when the cultural shift is made, we will be recovering in a different way. It’s my great hope that the film will shift the culture and make recovery from the cultural harm unnecessary.
Here’s my current answer. I expect it will change as I dig deeper.
Recovering health and wellbeing in the family system by learning about the impact of substance use on the brain, the body, the family and practicing the psycho-social and physical skills for regulation, relationship and wellness.
It’s a process of unlearning, of a change, of one small thing after one small thing.
How would you describe it?
