In The Mix
Where I share a collection of things and topics of interest I am reading, listening to or talking about
Welcome to “In The Mix” where I share what has piqued my curiosity and interest, heard through the grapevine or landed in my lap every two weeks (sometimes every week). A relevant curation of books, articles, websites, events, podcasts and such that might interest you too! I am a voracious & curious reader, explorer of innovation and thought leadership.
I’ve been in a little hibernation mode since Winter Solstice. Moving slow and being quiet during Winter months is a way that I conserve my energy, listen for my inner guidance and wait for inspiration and invitations to arrive that feel aligned and connected for me. My physical body appreciates the alignment with natural cycles and seasons. It’s one of the ways I take care of myself.
I’ve been completely consumed by Rick Rubin’s book The Creative Act, A Way of Being this past week including listening to him on Rich Roll’s and Andrew Huberman’s podcasts. It’s “the way of being” that resonates so deeply with me.
In 2018 I heard Dr. Crystal Collier speak on the brain science of addiction and she blew my mind. It was her talk that inspired me to create the Family Recovery Conference so more families could have access to her teachings and other peers and professionals in the field of recovery. Well she has a NEW BOOK! FOO Mapping: An 8-Week Journey to Map the Family-of-Origin Patterns That No Longer Serve You and a workshop to go along with it if you’re in the Houston area. Undoing Family of Origin patterns was essential to our family recovery.
Recovery Allies, How to Support Addiction Recovery and Build Recovery-Friendly Communities by Alison Jones was published in September. There is a live Book Talk February 9th at 7:30pm. You can register for the talk here.
My favorite breathwork teacher (also a person in recovery) Ashley Neese is sharing a workshop Tuesday, January 24th in the afternoon. You can sign up here. Her book How to Breathe, 25 practices for calm, joy and resilience has been a constant companion of mine and I share the practices with clients and families.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Glennon Doyle’s podcasts. She recently shared that she was diagnosed with anorexia. Eating disorders often accompany substance use and are more difficult to treat as they not only impact the body but also the brain.
If you want to get better at understanding others, the way we love and the value of secure attachment in our relationships listen to this episode with Dr. Becky. If you’ve heard of Internal Family Systems (IFS) work and want to hear more about it and its radical healing effects listen to this one. Glennon is using IFS work in her anorexia treatment. I’ve used it in my own trauma healing from the impact of addiction in my family.
I thought this episode was PHENOMENAL. A must listen for all.
Maybe you’re exploring sobriety or helping someone exploring sobriety or seeking recovery. Jessamyn Sara has developed a series on somatic sobriety and is offering a special this month for 1:1 sessions. She’s a lovely human and skilled practitioner with a deep heart. She’s also starting an alcohol free pop up bar in Phoenix called The Reclamation Bar. So cool! The first event is this Wednesday, January 25th.
Take good care!
