Looking back, when substance use was active in our family environment, we were all exhibiting the signs of being in “survival mode” which made it difficult to emotionally connect and get or receive help, care and nourishment. The substance became like a “primal need” for our loved one. The body telling the brain, this substance/substances are needed for survival. Our bodies crave the physical feelings produced by the natural pleasure/feel good chemicals dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins. In an addicted brain, those cravings will move our bodies to get those chemicals flowing through our system at all costs. (survival)
